EASY ACCESS TRAILS

Easy access trails are starting to appear across Britain, so here is a selection in the North West. These are official trails and have not necessarily been tried and tested but should be suitable for wheels.

Grizedale Forest in Cumbria has a fun Sculpture Trail suitable for wheels.

Spring Wood, Whalley is an area of ancient woodland with hard surfaced paths and an access trail with information boards.

XXX.

PWW23 Subberthwaite Common, Grizebeck

1 hour 30 minutes: 2.75 miles (5.4 km)

PWW19 Skelwith Force, Skelwith Bridge, Ambleside

45 mins: 1.2 miles (2km)

A short amble through woodland to a lovely waterfall. Good gravel paths all the way with some moderate slopes and the route is suitable for sturdy strollers. There is a short section on a main road, otherwise the woodland paths are great for little ones.

PWW16 Lammerside Castle, Kirkby Stephen

1 hour 30 mins: 2.5 miles (4 km)

A cross-country ramble along the beautiful Mallerstang valley past a collection of historic buildings. A combination of field paths and paved bridleways with great views of the surrounding fells. Field paths are uneven and can be muddy, but wide enough for double ATPs. Dogs must be controlled around livestock.
