What a winter!! Far more suitable for sledging and skating than walking with a pushchair, colder winters could become more frequent as a side-effect of global warming. Even more unbelievable is that here on the west coast of Scotland, our kids have been snow deprived and we had to venture into the mountains so they could have a go at sledging.

Now the excesses of Christmas and New Year are over, it's time to think of ways of shifting those extra pounds and walking with a pushchair (especially uphill!) provides a full body workout.

Winter Walking

Off-roaders are ideally suited for walking in the snow - a bit like beach walking, but colder - though there are extra safety considerations to bear in mind.

Snow and ice are slippery, so get the pushchair on a leash. Then if you fall, your baby stays with you.

Avoid narrow paths and steep slopes as these are much more dangerous in icy conditions.

Put your baby in plenty of clothes - remember they're sat still and not having the workout you are.

Take plenty of food and warm drinks to help keep you warm.

Don't venture too far from civilisation in case you do get stuck or there is extra snowfall.

Beware frozen lakes - ice can be great fun but can be too thin to support your weight.

Attraction of the Month

Attractions and events from around the UK, all year round activities and seasonal events... If you want to recommend a personal favourite, email us here.

Bearing in mind the continued snow forecast, this month's attraction is actually a website with free ideas of stuff you can do with the little ones while they're off school and bored!

The Little Experience.com

This website offers a selection of indoors, outdoors, crafty, fun stuff to occupy little hands. The boys and girls sections (actually suitable for all) give instructions for making kites, slime, bath bombs and lip balm. Not only that, but there are recipes not only for biscuits and cakes but also play dough, salt dough and papier mache.

So, unplug the TV, turn of the Playstation and have some creative fun together!

(N.B. pushchairwalks.co.uk has not necessarily visited the attractions featured and cannot be held responsible for the content of external websites or the quality of the attractions themselves.)

Skid pan or ice rink?

Whatever it is, they're not Torville and Dean!

(Culmstock Beacon, Wellington - coming soon)

Route News

Take care when walking in icy and snowy conditions! Avoid high narrow paths and steep slopes and take care around icy water.

Though we check as many routes as possible we can't visit them all, so please keep route changes coming in to us, they are invaluable in keeping the site up to date. If new obstacles have been encountered, please let us know where on the route they are so we can pass on the information.
