Page 1 2

Encompassing wild Argyll and the Isles, scenic Dumfries and Galloway, the Southern Uplands and metropolitan Glasgow, the south-west of Scotland has loads to offer. FREE WALK SUGGESTIONS!!

Here are some more ideas of where you can take your pushchair. These are lovely places to go, but not worth a route description.

Oban Sea Front - walk along the promenade to the lighthouse picnic spot for views of the islands and ferries. The road continues 2 miles to Ganavan beach, but there is about 1km without pavement.

Ganavan to Dunstaffnage - new multi-user trail from the sandy beach near Oban.

Loch Lomond - for a level stroll on the western shore, walk along the old A82, now an multi-user path. Central access at Firkin Point.

Aros Park, Tobermory, Mull has a lakeside path, now with an adventure trail for the big'uns.

EASY ACCESS TRAILS

Easy access trails are starting to appear across Britain, so here is a selection in Scotland. These are official trails and have not necessarily been tried and tested but should be suitable for wheels.

Galloway Forest Park has the Killoughtree all abilities trail - short, easy and suitable for all.

Penningham Pond near Newton Stewart offers an award winning path around a pond in attractive woodland.

Taynish Mill near Tayvallich is a 400m trail to a ruined mill on the shores of Loch Sween, part of a stunning nature reserve.

Dalbeattie Forest All Abilities Trail starts from the Town Wood car park and takes you through different types of woodland.

Details of other routes in Scotland suitable for wheelchairs can be found on the Walking on Wheels Trust website.

PWA23 Gylen Castle, Kerrera

3 hours: 5 miles (8km)

A great walk along good tracks to the remote Gylen Castle on the SW tip of the Isle of Kerrera. Not only that, but in season there's even a café at the end of the walk! ATPs only – tracks wide enough for doubles but there are some short steep inclines. Dogs on leads. Allow plenty of time for the return ferry.

PWA24 Kerrera , by Oban

4.5 hours: 6.5 miles (10km)

A stunning but strenuous walk round the south of the island of Kerrera off Oban. Good paths most of the way with one steep and boggy section, so ATPs only. And there's a tea shop at the half way mark! NB Allow enough time to catch the return ferry. This walk incorporates the route of PWA23.

PWA21 Kilchurn Castle, Dalmally

45 mins: 1.2 miles (2 km)

An easy, flat walk to a ruined mediaeval castle on a promontory jutting out into beautiful Loch Awe. Lovely views and a chance to explore the castle (may be closed in winter). There is an unfortunate kissing gate requiring lifting, otherwise suitable for all pushchairs. Dogs must be on a lead.

PWA29 Arichonan Township, Tayvallich

1 hour: 1.5 miles (2km )

A short but initially steep walk to an atmospheric ruined village, deserted during the Highland Clearances. Spectacular views and good going on grassy and rocky paths – the perfect picnic spot!

PWA13 Glengorm Castle, Tobermory, Mull

1 hour 30 mins: 2 miles (3.5km)

Walk from a baronial castle to a prehistoric hillfort, both with stunning coastal views and there's even a café at by the car park! Grassy paths, boggy in places so ATPs only. Dogs to be kept on a lead.

PWA11: Torosay Castle, Mull

1 hr 30 mins: 2.5 miles (4 km)

A delightful woodland walk to a castle, with the option of taking the Mull Railway one way! Lovely views over the sea to Duart Castle and it's gravel track all the way. Moderate inclines, the railway is seasonal, and there's a fee to enter the castle and gardens. This walk can be done from the Oban ferry.

PWA12 Laggan Sands, Lochbuie, Mull

2 hours: 4 miles (7km)

A great walk to a long sandy beach and a 16th century chapel, via a ruined castle. Spectacular coastal scenery with big Atlantic waves in a truly remote spot, though you can get ice creams at the post office on weekdays! Good track and grassy paths all the way, though rough gravel so ATPs only.

PWA27 Bridgend Woodland, Islay

1 hour 30 mins: 2.75 miles (4.5km )

A beautiful woodland walk on the island of Islay famed for its whiskies! Though no distilleries on route, this walk goes through lovely deciduous trees which have a carpet of bluebells in spring. Paths uneven and muddy in places, so ATPs only.

PWA26 Loch Tarbert, Jura

1 hour: 2 miles (3 km )

Walk to the narrowest point on Jura, a notoriously awkward boat anchorage and where the Vikings dragged their ships between the shores. Easily accessible with an ATP, this walk has a very remote feel. The end stretch is tidal, so keep an eye on the water level.

PWA6 Easdale, by Oban

1 hour (excl boat): 1.5 miles (2 km)

A circuit around the conservation island of Easdale, south of Oban once famous for its slate which was exported worldwide for roofing. Stunning views over the isle of Mull and neighbouring islands. Museum, cafe and pub in season. ATPs only as paths are rough and narrow.

PWA31 Ellenabeich, Isle of Seil

1 hour: 1.5 miles (2 km)

Explore the coast and quarry pools around Ellenabeich at the south of the Isle of Seil. Spectacular views from every angle, pebbly beaches, pub and mini-golf, this short walk has plenty to entertain the little ones – even dolphins if you're lucky!

PWA28 Lismore Coast to Coast, by Oban

3 hours (excl. ferry): 5 miles (8.5km)

A tough walk taking you from the Oban ferry over the beautiful isle of Lismore to visit a ruined castle, by way of a café and heritage museum (in season) with stunning views throughout. The start has very uneven terrain, so experienced off-roaders only. 3 obstacles requiring lifting.

PWA30 Ardmaddy Castle and Bay, by Oban

1 hour 30 mins: 2.5 miles (3.5km)

A route taking you from the lovely gardens of Ardmaddy Castle into the surrounding woodland and coastal areas. Lovely sea views and the chance to buy seasonal fruit and veg from the castle gardens! Off-roaders only.
